Unconditional Gifts
Part 14

Good to his word, Trowa had returned directly to Wufei's side. Sitting down beside the Chinese boy, he silently offered his hand palm up inviting the other to take hold of it or ignore it whichever Wufei needed from him. Without hesitation, though, a bronze hand came down to firmly intertwine their fingers and clasp them together with a shy smile.

"Is everything all right upstairs, Tro?" Wufei asked quietly while Heero made a point of leaving the room to allow them some privacy.

The slender teen immediately noted the return of his nickname to the lips of the boy he loved and his small smile blossomed fully before he responded, "For the most part, yes. We couldn't get the door back in place, but we all agreed it didn't really matter."

"Ah," Wufei nodded even though he had no idea what Trowa really meant.

"How are things here?" Trowa asked, skirting the issue slightly, but at least trying to address matters as well as he could while the truth remained unspoken.

Coffee-dark eyes dropped down momentarily, as Wufei felt a wave of sorrow run through him but he fought it back and looked up with a tiny smile, "Things here, as you say, are about as good as one might hope for at this point."

It was Trowa's turn to be confused by this, but the entire conversation came to an end as Duo and Quatre walked down the stairs, Quatre's soft laughter bouncing off the walls.

Wufei looked up, curious to see what anyone in the group had found to be happy about and was doubly shocked when Duo commented in annoyance, "When did we run out of 'Scooby-Doo' Band-Aids? I coulda sworn I put those on the shopping list."

"Nani?" The Chinese boy asked, suddenly concerned. "Who needs a bandage and why?"

Quatre shook his head and laughed, holding his hand up, not the least bit upset any longer that Duo had insisted on bandaging his minor injury. If it distracted everyone and let them relax, a little embarrassment was worth it, and the bright purple "Barney" Band-Aid that Duo had somehow located to use was no longer as annoying as it had seemed at first. "It's just a scrape, Wufei. That silly door up there and I had a wrestling contest and it won."

"So I see." Wufei smiled in spite of himself, as he commented dryly, "Purple is a lovely color for a bandage and so subtle, too."

In that one moment, Quatre felt himself relax more than he had all day and he finally gave in to the temptation to simply laugh out loud. Following suit, one by one the other teenagers allowed smiles, giggles, and in Duo's case, guffaws to fill the air.

As Heero wandered back into the room, a slight smile on his own face, Duo glanced over at him and tried to get himself under control before asking, "So, Heero, got any plans for tonight? For the group, I mean," he added quickly when his lover shot him a questioning look.

"Not particularly," the Japanese teen shrugged, "But it's late and after such a long day, I assumed a few people might need some rest."

As if on cue, Quatre yawned, genuinely tired from his many trips up and down the stairs helping as best he could during the crisis that had begun at dawn that morning.

Trowa glanced at Wufei who had gone back to resting his head on his shoulder and asked quietly, "What about you, koi? I know we both slept a lot today, but you seem tired."

"I am," Wufei remarked in confusion. "I have no idea why I feel so exhausted. Maybe going back to bed would be a good idea."

"Um, Wufei?" Quatre offered, "I think I know why you're so tired. You weren't really asleep most of the day, I can't explain it any better now than I could earlier, but it was as if you just shut down this morning. I don't think your body got any rest at all that way, I wouldn't worry over it, though."

Wufei considered this and then nodded slowly, further confused by the fact that this non-information actually made him feel less worried about it. "If you say so, Quatre."

Both young men were quite wrong, however. The depression that had haunted Wufei during the time spent in the small apartment had never left him and the new crisis was only making a bad situation worse in that regard.

"As for me, I'm beat," Quatre remarked after another huge yawn, rising to go back up the stairs. "I'll see everybody in the morning."

"Good night, Q-Ball!" Duo grinned then added, "Thanks again for all the help today!"

"No problem, Duo," the Sandrock pilot smiled back before disappearing for the night.

"I believe I shall go lay down, too," Wufei commented, releasing Trowa's hand as he stood only to find the taller teen was instantly on his feet, too, recapturing his hand with a shy smile. Glancing at their joined fingers, the dark-eyed boy felt a slight hitch in his breathing as hope began to reemerge.

"I'll go with you, if you don't mind," Trowa offered, once more allowing the level of contact to be Wufei's decision. He was actually painfully shy about the very idea of laying in the same bed they had shared that morning, but Trowa was willing to face whatever he had to in the effort to reassure the boy who held his heart.

"I do not mind." Wufei answered, then added quietly, "I would be lonely without you, angel."

Trowa's heart leapt and he tightened his fingers ever so slightly, silently conveying his thanks for the smaller boy's trust.

"Good night, guys," Trowa commented as he guided Wufei towards the stairs, barely suppressing the now almost automatic urge to pick him up bodily and carry him to their bedroom. However, the sight of the Chinese boy's formal white silks instead of the casual clothes he had been wearing reminded the emerald-eyed teen that much had changed in the relatively short period of time since Wufei had been recovering from Quatre's assault.

"Rest well," Duo told them both with a hopeful smile and Heero just added his own wishes with a silent nod of his head.

Casting a glance at the pair of teens who had worked so diligently to help him get through the tragic day's events, Wufei felt grateful and more than a little afraid. Only he knew the truth of the matters the others had been speculating about and the Chinese boy was certain that the pain was only starting.
