Epilogue
The sun was shining brightly over the horizon of the city. There were kids riding bikes and laughing and playing, playgrounds being put to use and squirt guns out for the hot August day.
As the sun shown down to brighten everyone's day; it also shown down to help pave the way for one individual to go down a new path.
Duo sighed as he put the last box in the back of the van. They had rented it for the long drive and all of his stuff fit perfectly and left enough room for everyone to be comfortable.
"Well...that's everything." Duo said with a sort of sad smile.
"Yeah. Well, we will be waiting in the car while you say bye to your friends." Zechs said. Duo nodded. Treize and Zechs smiled at the group of friends Duo had beside him; all of them ready to say their farewells. The two men got in the car and waited on Duo.
Duo smiled at Une and Noin who had gave him huge hugs and huge care packages.
"Take care of yourself Duo." Noin said.
"Yes, best of luck to you." Une added. Duo smiled at them and nodded. Reiko came up next and gave Duo a more than friendly looking hug. Duo had to hide Reiko's gift to him in his backpack.
"You have my number. Don't be afraid to use it if you..."
"...are feeling lonely without Heero yeah I know." Duo said with a laugh. Reiko smiled.
"Actually. If you ever need a friend. I'm there for ya. Life on your own can be rough, trust me, but you are going to do great out there. I just know it."
"Wow Reiko. I didn't know you could be so sentimental." Duo said with a laugh.
"Tell anyone and I'll kill you." Duo smiled and then Hilde and Kenji came up. Kenji just gave Duo a brief hug, but Hilde nearly hugged him hard enough to make him pass out.
Of course she was crying.
"Oh Duo. I remember when we first walked to school together that day. I'm going to miss you so much." Duo smiled and held back his own tears. He didn't like seeing his friends cry. He smiled and kissed Hilde's forehead.
"I'll be back you know. Just stay out of trouble with Kenji." Duo said with a smile. The two of them had given him a comforter and some sheets.
Something every college student needs.
"I will try to." Duo smiled and ruffled her hair. Sally was the next to hug him, tears in her eyes.
"You will be missed Duo." She said. Duo smiled and hugged her back.
"Thank you Sally. And thank you for your gift. I don't think I'll be running out of shampoo and conditioner for a while." The girl laughed and smiled, wiping away her tears. Duo felt his heart stop when Wufei, Trowa, and Quatre came up to him.
"Maxwell. You are more trouble than you are worth sometimes." Wufei said with a smirk.
"You know you love me Fei." Duo said with a smirk. For the first time, Duo saw Wufei give him a real smile. The Chinese boy gave him a tight hug and kissed his cheek.
"Yes I do Duo. I do love you. We all do." Duo smiled and felt his eyes water up. Trowa just smiled and him and gave him a hug too, and that was the end of it.
That was all the emotion he needed from Trowa to know that he would miss him.
Quatre sniffled and glomped onto Duo.
"Duo! You are such a good friend. Irea and Kyosuke send their best." Duo smiled and hugged Quatre back.
"I know they do." The two of them couldn't be there, but they had given Duo a really useful gift.
Money.
Enough to open up a bank account and put a nice amount in it.
"Duo...I'm going to miss you. Who else am I going to tease about the noises he makes?" Quatre asked, trying to lighten the mood.
"Well Wufei is pretty noisy." Wufei glared.
"You should know Maxwell! Who wouldn't be noisy with your talents." Duo blushed and the three boys laughed.
They still could get to Duo.
"Duo...we have something for you." Trowa said, handing Duo a long black case. Duo opened it and gasped, a beautiful gold chain with angel wings at the center of it.
"We thought you could use that. To show everyone where you came from. To show them that you are protected by the Angels." Quatre explained. Duo allowed a tear to fall from the endearment.
"Thank you guys." They all hugged again. Wufei took the necklace and put it around Duo's neck. Duo smiled and touched the wings, his heart fluttering. The three boys stepped away and finally...
...Heero and Duo stood together.
Everything seemed to freeze when their eyes met. Duo still looked very beautiful to Heero, and vice versa. The two said nothing, because saying anything would spoil the moment. Duo suddenly launched himself at Heero, his body trembling with sadness at the thought of leaving him. Heero hugged him back tightly, his eyes shut to hide the pain filled look they had.
"Heero..."
"Shh." Duo looked up in time to meet Heero's lips in a kiss.
Everyone stood and watched, feeling the emotions rolling off of the two boys. More tears went out to the lovers, surprisingly more from the Angels.
Their leader had a taste of true love, and now it was going away.
The kiss ended and their eyes met again. Heero smiled at Duo and kissed his forehead.
"Go out there and do good Duo. When you come back I want to hear nothing but good things about you." Duo smiled.
"And the same goes to you Heero." The two smiled at each other and Duo looked at everyone.
"I guess this is goodbye then."
"Not goodbye Duo. You only say goodbye when you are leaving for good. You aren't leaving for good." Trowa said surprisingly. Duo smiled and bowed his head.
"Yeah. You're right. Well then...see you all later." Duo smiled, tears falling but his face showing that he was really happy to be going to school.
The tears showing that he would miss everyone terribly.
"Wait!" Duo looked at Heero and his love went to his motorcycle. Duo looked on curiously until Heero came back with a velvet feeling box. Duo looked at it in confusion then back at Heero.
"Heero?" Heero put the box in Duo's hand and smiled, silent tears falling.
"Don't open it until you leave." Duo blinked but then nodded, not understanding what he meant but he would do what he asked anyway.
"O.K. Uh...bye guys." Everyone came and gave Duo another round of hugs, Heero placing one last kiss on Duo's lips, and Duo walked away to the car.
"I love you Heero." Duo said from the car.
"Hai. Ai shiteru Duo." Heero and Duo smiled at each other, but their tears were still falling. Finally, Duo got in the car.
Heero didn't even move until the car was down the street and around the corner.
"Ready Duo?" Treize asked from the driver's side. The men would take turns driving, not stopping unless if it was a pit stop, until they got there due to all the stuff they had. Duo looked back and saw Heero standing there watching him. Duo nodded, Treize starting the car. The van pulled off and Duo waved at Heero, his face looking sad.
The smile had been fake because deep down he wanted to die.
He sighed and turned to sit the right way in his seat. Zechs gave him some tissue to clean his face and Duo smiled gratefully.
"What's that in your hand?" Zechs asked. Duo eyed the box and smiled.
"A gift from Heero. He told me to wait until I left to open it."
"Well you're on your way now, so open it." Treize said, laughter in his voice. Duo smiled and nodded, opening the box.
What he saw made his heart freeze up.
And the air in his lungs was sucked out of him.
There was a note in the top part of the case that Duo didn't even notice at first. But the glittering gold ring he did notice.
"Is that what I think it is?" Zechs asked, eyeing the ring. Duo couldn't respond, his fingers tracing the ring as if it would disappear if he touched it.
It was still there.
He finally noticed the note and read it, his eyes watering with each word:
Duo,
I will always be here for you, no matter how far away you are. This ring is my symbol of love to you.
That's right, it's an engagement ring.
I was going to do it over the summer, but I think we can wait a while. I want you to get adjusted to your new life, and when you come back and you still want to make me the happiest man alive by marriage, then it will be an honor.
I love you Duo Maxwell, and I will be here when you get back.
Heero
Duo suddenly shut the case and unlocked his door.
"STOP THE CAR!" Treize gasped and stopped the car, some of the boxes moving around from the sudden stop.
"What? Duo?" Duo didn't say anything. He darted out of the car and back in the direction of where Heero was.
"Come on Heero. Let's go." Quatre said softly. Reiko, Une, and Noin had already left. Only Heero and the rest of the Angels plus Sally remained. Heero nodded his head sadly and turned to get on his motorcycle.
This is what Duo wanted, and whatever Duo wanted Heero would do.
But it still hurt him.
Quatre patted Heero's back, his leader shutting his eyes to squeeze the tears out. Quatre felt his own eyes water.
Heero had changed a lot. He had never showed any emotions besides anger and determination in front of them.
Duo had changed Heero...probably for the better.
Heero was about to start up his bike when he heard a faint voice.
A voice calling his name.
"Huh?"
"...Heero!"
Heero blinked and looked at the other Angels as if to say, "Did you hear it too or is it just me?" The other Angels stopped and listened.
"Heero!"
"I heard it too. Who..."
"It sounded like..."
"HEERO WAIT!"
"Duo!" Heero jumped off of his bike and looked down the street Duo had just gone down and gasped, a very familiar figure running up to him.
"Duo?"
"HEERO!"
"DUO!" Heero took off after him, the two running towards each other.
Duo was laughing and crying and smiling all at the same time. He finally reached Heero who held his arms out for him. Duo leapt into his strong arms and Heero held onto him tightly, petting his hair and trailing his hand down the long braid. Duo snuggled into his chest, his breath ragged from his running and crying.
"Duo...what are you doing..."
"Do it right Heero."
"What?"
"Do it right. Ask me...to marry you the right way." Heero looked down at him and could tell that Duo was serious.
"But...I wanted you to get adjusted and..." Duo shook his head.
"Heero please. This has got to be one of my biggest wishes come true. I don't need time to adjust to them to know how much I love you and how much I want you to be my husband. I asked you once to ask me to stay and you refused. Then I asked you to ask me to leave and you did. Now...ask me to marry you...please?" Duo said with a smile. Heero took the box that was in Duo's hand and opened it, taking out the gold ring. Duo's heart stopped when he got down on one knee and took Duo's hand in his.
"Duo...will you marry me?" Duo found his body trembling and had to fight the urge to just faint and have Heero catch him.
"Yes...oh gods yes!" Heero smiled and placed the ring on Duo's finger and kissed his hand. He stood up and lifted Duo in the air, twirling him around like a little kid. Duo smiled brightly, laughter leaving his throat. Heero tilted his head up and put Duo down enough so he could kiss him, the two boys sighing into the kiss.
Eventually Heero let Duo's feet touch the ground and the boy attacked his lips again and again with little kisses.
"I love you so much Heero." Duo said in between kisses. Heero smiled and held him so he could stop with the little kisses and initiated a kiss of his own.
The two stayed like that for as long as they could, lips locked and bodies pressed together. The sound of a car horn caught their attention and they turned to see Treize and Zechs looking at them with amused looks.
"We'd hate to break this up but...we should go Duo." Duo sighed and nodded sadly. He looked back at Heero who nodded his head. Duo smiled and held his angel wing necklace, his engagement ring clinking with it.
"I'll be here when you get back." Heero repeated what he wrote on the note. Duo nodded.
"And I will come back to you." The two shared one more kiss...
...and Duo walked away to begin a new life.
One that would include Heero no matter what the distance.
