SUMMARY: In their own ways, both Duo and Heero are rather oblivious.

Oblivious
by Dev-Aki Basaa

~~~~
Heero doesn't realize what an attractive and desirable man he is.
~~~~

"Hey Heero, you have some admirers over there."

Duo turned around to nudge Heero with his elbow, giving a nod towards the three girls huddled together across the street from where they were standing. Heero didn't turn around.

"Hardly," Heero said instead. "They're probably looking at you."

Duo glanced over at the girls again and decided their gaze was firmly aimed towards his companion's back.

Duo chuckled. "I don't think so."

"Why wouldn't they be?" Heero said, his voice barely a whisper. Duo just nudged him again and tried to subtly point.

"Look you can tell, they're looking right at you. Give them a wink or something."

Duo turned back around to see Heero walking away. He just rolled his eyes and jogged to catch up with him.

~~~~
And he's oblivious to the attention he receives.
~~~~

The girl giggled as she handed Heero his order. "Here, sir, I gave you an extra cookie for your sundae," she said.

"Thanks." Heero took the bowl and then turned to face Duo, who was poking his spoon at his own sundae.
"Aw, com'on Heero," Duo began, speaking discreetly so the girl wouldn't hear. "You should say more than just 'thanks'. She was so flirting with you."

Heero didn't respond. He reached into the bowl and took the extra cookie between his fingers. He held it out to Duo.

"Here, have the cookie. Aren't these your favorite kind?"

Duo took it, a little taken aback at Heero's complete dismissal of his prodding. "Er, yeah, they are. Thanks, Heero," he added with a smile.

~~~~
His whole life has been focused outward, he never had the chance to develop vanity. Granted, this has its disadvantages.
~~~~

Duo knocked on Heero's bedroom door and waited a moment before letting himself in. He threw open the door and stopped short when he saw his roommate.

"You're not wearing that, are you?"

Heero looked down at his jeans and t-shirt. They looked fine to him. Besides, it was a brand-new t-shirt. He glanced back up at Duo and frowned.

"What's wrong with it?"

"You're kidding, right?" Duo folded his arms across his chest. Heero saw that Duo was wearing black slacks and boots, a rich red dress shirt with a black tie. He looked really good.

Duo shook his head and pushed passed Heero. "It's a dinner party, you can't wear that."

"Quatre said to dress comfortably."

Duo gave him an exasperated look and then turned to open up Heero's closet and stick his head inside. Heero smiled a little; he found Duo's behavior to be rather amusing.

"Okay, you?ve got black jeans and a dark blue dress shirt. You'll still be comfortable and at least this way, you'll impress somebody."

Duo pulled out the clothes, yanked them off the hangers and shoved them into Heero's arms.

"I can't believe I'm picking your clothes out for you. Why don't you just stick me in an apron and call me your wife, jeeze."

Heero wasn't entirely sure what came over him, but the words tumbled forward before he could think about them. "No. But I wouldn't mind calling you my husband."

Duo, thumbing though Heero's ties, froze.

~~~~
But for some reason that I may never determine...
~~~~

After a moment, Duo seemed to shake off his paralysis. He grabbed a tie and held it out to Heero. He didn't turn to look at him.

"Yeah, Heero," he said, "you shouldn't joke about things like that. Here put this on too."

Heero knew he couldn't take back what he'd just said, even if he wanted to. He wasn't sure he did. Nothing left but to push forward. He reached for the tie and took Duo's hand instead. Duo turned sharply towards him, his gaze fixed to his hand in Heero's.

"Who said I'm joking."

~~~~
... he decided he fancied me.
~~~~

Duo started to shake his head, a forced smile curling his lips. Heero could almost hear the joke coming, humor to take away from the seriousness of the situation. Heero wasn't going to let him do that this time.

"You can be such a dunce sometimes."

"Hey!" Duo scowled at the insult, finally making eye contact with Heero by way of his glare. Heero pulled on Duo's arm and brought him up against his chest. He dropped the clothes and reached for Duo's face. Taking Duo's shock to his advantage, Heero tilted Duo's head and leaned in to capture his lips.

The kiss was pure sweetness. Everything he thought it might be like. The warmth of it; the sense of rightness about it. It felt as good as Duo looked. Heero slowly broke the kiss and held Duo's gaze, waiting for his reaction.

"You're serious," Duo finally said, breathless.

Heero nodded. "Yeah."

Duo leaned back in and kissed Heero again.

~~~~
So I realized it's not obliviousness that keeps him from noticing the looks of desire he's given.
~~~~

Duo laughed as he turned around and nudged Heero with his elbow. "Hey, Heero, your admirers are back again."

Heero reached over, brushed his fingers across Duo's cheek and smiled. "I haven't noticed."

~~~~
It's because he's too busy looking at me.
