Racing With Secrets
Part 14

When Quatre returned to Laurel's room, he was surprised to find a vast increase in floral arrangements. The bunch of daisies Trowa had brought awhile ago had been discarded, and arrangement he himself had ordered and another from Wufei and Sally were wilting. But they were nothing compared to what he walked into.

"Um, what happened here? The Rose Parade get sent over?" he joked.

"Daddy!" Laurel smiled happily as he went straight to her for a hug. "These came while we were gone! They are from school, my bus driver, the orphanage, the guard who accidentally shot me sent one, and there's one from Dr. Joe and Nurse Mitsu-chan, too! It came with their wedding invitation! It's really pretty and I know I can't go and all, but do you think they'd like a picture from me as a present? I can color something happy since I'm left-handed and everything!" The little girl's exuberance was astounding.

"Sure, sweetheart, that would be nice. I'm sure they'd love it. If you feel like coloring, we can get you some crayons and everything, what would you like? I think Duo and Heero could both use a happy picture, too." He glanced sadly at Trowa when he added this knowing Trowa would understand far better than she would what pain they were going through.

"Oh, anything's fine, Daddy. At school I had a box with 16 crayons and that was a lot, so I guess a box like that and some paper are all I need."

"Would you like a coloring book too, baby?" Trowa asked, getting up to go purchase the items.

"Oh, you don't have to buy me so much, Daddy, I'll be fine with just plain paper."

He smiled and ruffled her hair, "Well, I'll go see what I can find and be back in a little while, okay?" He gave her a kiss on the cheek then brushed a light touch to Quatre's face on the way out the door. Quatre smiled up tiredly, the talk with Duo had been taxing for him.

"Quatre-daddy, do you mind if I take a nap?" She pretended to be sleepy since Quatre looked tired.

"I think a nap sounds like a good idea, sweetheart. Mind if I take one, too?"

She smiled slyly to herself. "Oh no, Daddy, that's fine. Sweet dreams!" And the lights went out in a room that now smelled like a florist's shop.

Finally, after several more annoying days passed for the braided teen, he saw his fiancé for the first time in what seemed like years.

"Heero!" He practically shouted when the other boy was escorted to his room. If there hadn't been so many tubes and patches left attached to him, he would have bolted out of the bed.

"Koibito, how I've missed you," Heero murmured burying his face and hands in the luxurious chestnut braid. Tears filled his cobalt-blue eyes as he leaned back to look his violet-eyed lover in the face before they kissed deeply. They clung together for as long as they could before breaking to breathe.

"Heero, koi, what happened to you? They wont tell me much except that you were not doing too good or something." Long fingers swept shaggy brown hair out of those deep blue eyes lovingly. "They said it was because of what happened about me getting a heart transplant, that you brought it to me. How did you do that?"

"Gomen, Duo, I can't stay long but I'll try to tell you what I can. First, koi, I was in a coma for five days. Wait! Don't get upset, I'm fine now, it was a bad reaction to a drug, that's all. It knocked me down for quite awhile, and I'm just now able to get around more." Heero once more took a moment to stare into those eyes. "Yes, I did bring the heart for you. They said you were going to die and, well, I think I went a little crazy or something and did some things I shouldn't have, but you're alive and that's all I care about now."

Duo wrapped his arms around Heero's neck and answered, "Yup, I'm alive and now you're stuck with me! I'm not letting you out of my sight again for a long time, koibito! It hurt being apart this long, I don't want to do that again any time soon!"

A cough was heard from the doorway. Duo noticed the large man standing there for the first time.

"Hey, Heero? Who's your friend over there? I've met Gene Starwind, what a nut case! Reminds me of, well, *me*! But who's tall, dark, and angry-looking with you?" Duo teased not knowing what he was getting into.

"Well, Duo, this is Jack Ryuzouji. Come on in, Jack, meet Duo Maxwell. *This* is the reason I did what I did, just so you'll know." Heero's eyes looked sad briefly and Duo noticed.

"Well, nice to meet you, Jack!" Duo forced a smile somehow knowing it *wasn't* nice meeting this man at all. Especially when they shook hands and Duo noticed the shoulder holster under the jacket.

"Um, good to meet you, Mr. Maxwell." Jack looked very uncomfortable all of a sudden. Having a face to attach to the crimes Heero had committed only made his job harder. "Mr. Yuy, we need to leave now."

"Right." Heero sighed, then turned back to Duo, "Give me a minute more, okay, Jack?" Heero noticed the man nodded and stepped back to the door. "Koibito," Heero nuzzled Duo's ear, "It's going to be awhile until we can get everything straightened out. I have to leave now but you need to know that everything I did was done of my own free will. Forgive me for any pain I cause you." He paused to makes sure Duo was looking straight into his eyes. "Duo, ai shiteru. Never doubt it and never forget it!" Heero passionately kissed him one last time then spun to leave before Duo could ask any questions.

Confused, Duo had reached to touch his tingling lips when he heard the unmistakable sound of handcuffs and shackles being locked into place. Jack's deep voice resonated in the hallway, "Come on, Yuy. You got your request, now we're late to get to the Precinct. Move it!" Clanking chains and muffled footsteps were the only answer.

"HEERO!!!!" Duo shouted, desperately tearing needles out of his skin and trying to get out of the bed to find out what they had done to his lover. He was found unconscious on the floor moments later when the heart monitor patch detached sending a shrill alarm throughout the cardiac unit.
