Teacher's Pet
Part 7

The next day was agony; there was no way for them to be together. Duo had to help clean around the orphanage and do his homework. Heero had grading and other paperwork to catch up on. Both counted the minutes until they could see each other, even if it was at school. The day passed slowly; until Heero decided to do some research. What he found totally absorbed him for the rest of the day. By the time he fell into bed, completely exhausted, he knew he had something positive to tell Duo, finally. He couldn't wait to see the longhaired boy the next day.

Unable to talk much in class, Heero settled for admiring Duo across the room, trying desperately not to stare too much, or get aroused. It wasn't easy; Duo radiated pure sensuality, and the little they had done together had only increased his appetite for more. Every time Heero looked at the sexy boy, all he could think of was how Duo looked, pants open, pumping his own cock, climaxing all over himself while he moaned Heero's name. Or the feeling of the boy's lithe body moving against his as they danced, hardness rubbing against aching hardness. All he could do was look forward to the end of the day when they could be alone, and Heero could tell him what he had found.

Heero arrived at the library, unable to stop grinning. He couldn't wait to see Duo, just to be with him. But the longhaired boy wasn't there. Heero tried not to worry too much; maybe he had been kept after by another teacher. But there was a nagging worry in the back of his mind; something wasn't right. He waited; Duo had never been this late. Heero began to believe that something was seriously wrong. But what could he do? How could he check up on Duo without raising suspicions? Heero waited 20 minutes, then decided he had to do something. He walked around the campus, looking for Duo, or something that would lead him to his love. He didn't know what he was looking for, but he knew he had to do something. Heero walked by what he knew was Duo's last class, but the room was empty. Not knowing where else to check, Heero stopped in the office. There was no one there; even the secretaries had gone home. Heero stepped out into the hallway once again; he frowned. What had happened? Heero began to get a cold feeling in his stomach; something was very wrong.

Heero walked down the pathway that led to the quad; the campus was unnaturally still after school hours. The quad was the only bright spot in an otherwise nondescript school; unfortunately most of the students used it as a make-out or smoking area. Heero stopped to pick up some trash from under a bush when he heard it; a quiet whimpering that tore at his heart. Dropping the paper, he walked forward, following the sound. His mind screamed at him; his heart hammered; his palms began to sweat. No, no, no... then he saw the end of a long braid and his heart nearly burst. Duo!

Duo was curled up on the dry grass, clutching his stomach. He didn't look up when Heero approached. Desperately, Heero called Duo's name as he sank to his knees next to him. "Duo!"

Duo didn't answer. Heero touched his shoulder, and Duo flinched, screaming, "No!"

That was when Heero noticed that Duo's clothes were ripped badly. His blood turned to ice. "Duo, it's me, Heero. Talk to me. What happened?" Although, he already had a pretty good idea.

"N... nothing," sobbed Duo, though that clearly wasn't the case.

"Was it those assholes? Tell me!" demanded Heero, nearly blind with rage. But Duo only curled up into a tighter ball. "Oh, Duo," Heero whispered, realizing that his anger wouldn't help his love right now. He deliberately pushed the rage aside, vowing to get his revenge very soon. Right now, he had to take care of Duo. After checking that the boy had no major injuries, he gathered him up in his arms and carried him to the car. He drove to the hospital as fast as he could manage. Relinquishing the longhaired boy to the hospital staff was one of the hardest things he had ever done; that, and having to tell the staff that he wasn't family, but only Duo's teacher. Not, family, no, but soulmates; although that didn't seem to matter here. The nurse said she would contact Duo's guardians, but Heero would not leave.

Heero sat nervously in the waiting room; he couldn't get his mind away from the fragile longhaired boy that ruled his heart and soul. He wouldn't leave, not until Duo was well. Finally, the nurse called him over and handed him the phone; it was the head of the orphanage, thanking him profusely for his help with Duo. Also, the lady said, it wasn't possible for any of the staff to come down; would it be too much trouble for him take time out of his busy schedule and check on Duo occasionally? Heero couldn't believe his luck; the woman had given permission for him to visit Duo whenever he wanted. He said immediately that it was no bother at all, he didn't mind. His heart leapt; at least he would be able to watch over Duo. The woman was so grateful that Heero almost felt guilty; but his love and concern for the beautiful boy overrode everything else.

He handed the phone back to the nurse; and immediately asked to see Duo. He was directed to the boy's room; Heero didn't hesitate, he needed to see his love. His heart almost broke when he saw the longhaired boy; he looked tiny, the hospital bed seemed to swallow him up. He had bandages in several places; and a cast on his left wrist. His beautiful face was bruised and scratched. Heero had to stand still for a moment to get his anger under control. The last thing Duo needed right now was more anger. He would get revenge; but later, and on his own terms.

He approached Duo's bedside quietly; the longhaired boy appeared to be sleeping. Heero pulled up a chair and settled down beside Duo's bed; he wasn't going to leave until Duo awakened.

About a half hour later, Duo stirred. Heero was immediately on his feet beside the bed, holding Duo's uninjured hand.

"Heero..." Duo whispered. "My head hurts..."

"Relax, Duo... you have a concussion," Heero fought down the anger as he said those words. Duo needed him to be reassuring. "Do you remember what happened?"

Duo frowned; Heero's heart ached as he saw the pain on the bruised yet beautiful face. "I... I was going to meet you... I cut across the quad... and there they were... I couldn't get away," tears started to fall from the violet eyes. "I tried to fight back... there were 6 of them... no one else was around... I'm sorry, Heero..."

Heero growled dangerously. He had seen Duo's ripped clothes. "What did they do to you, Duo?"

Duo's eyes widened; Heero thought... "No! They, um, didn't do that, Heero! They just, um, grabbed me and hit me and stuff..." Duo looked down, blushing.

Heero tried to put his rage aside again. "It's ok, Duo, you're safe now. I'm so sorry I wasn't there to help you," Heero finished miserably.

"Oh, Heero, it's not your fault! Please don't say that!" Duo exclaimed, squeezing Heero's hand. "I'll be ok. I knew those assholes wouldn't give up. I know the type."

Heero looked at Duo's brave face. "I'll make sure they are dealt with, one way or the other," he promised. Duo believed him. "I love you, Duo."

Despite his injuries, Heero's words made him smile. "I love you, too, Heero," he replied, and with a grin, he added, "And I can't wait to show you how much."

"Duo!" despite himself, Heero felt his body react to Duo's flirtatious words.

Duo smirked. "What?" he said innocently.

Heero looked deep into violet eyes. "You're terrible. Even in the hospital, you tease me."

"That's why you love me," smiled Duo.

"One of the many reasons," agreed Heero, and carefully brought the boys hand up to his mouth and kissed it gently, just letting the tip of his tongue graze Duo's soft skin. Duo shivered. Heero smiled.

"What about my schoolwork?" Duo asked, yawning. "Tired..."

"I'll bring it to you, don't worry about it right now. You have a concussion, give yourself time to heal. They want to keep you a few days for observation," Heero assured him.

Duo thought of something. "How did you get in to see me? What about the orphanage?"

"I spoke to the director. She gave me full permission to see you any time I want," Heero replied. "And I'll tell her I'll watch over you, bring your homework and stuff. She was very happy that I could help."

Duo smiled. "Yes, she's nice enough, they're just understaffed. There's a waiting list to get a room now. I hope they don't give mine away!" Duo joked, and yawned again.

"Rest now, Duo, I'm not going anywhere. I'll be right here when you wake up," promised Heero, releasing the boy's hand and sitting in the chair beside the bed.

"Promise?" Duo repeated, and Heero nodded. "Ok, then. Maybe just for a bit..."

In a few minutes, the longhaired boy was sound asleep, and Heero watched him sleep for a few minutes before stepping out of the room to make a phone call.

Later, Duo woke, and looked immediately for Heero. The teacher was sitting in the same place, eyes closed. Duo smiled and said, "Good morning!"

Heero opened his eyes and grinned. "Actually, it's still evening, Duo. And hello. How do you feel?"

Duo moved experimentally. "Better. My head hurts less. But now my ribs hurt. And I'm hungry!"

"When are you not hungry?" Heero laughed. "You slept through dinner, I didn't want to disturb you." Duo started to pout, but Heero quickly added, "But I took the liberty of getting you a little something..." He pulled out several plastic containers of Chinese food, enough to feed several people.

"Heero!" exclaimed Duo, "You're wonderful!"

"I had to smuggle it in," Heero explained. He helped Duo sit up and arranged the food for him, and the teenager dug in like he was starving. Duo was halfway through the food when he realized something else. "What's all that?" he asked, waving his chopsticks at the bundles on the floor.

Heero was waiting for him to notice that. "I've been busy," he said, worried that this new development would upset the boy. At Duo's inquiring look, he continued, slightly embarrassed. "I called the orphanage back, to let the director know how you were. I told them you would be here for a few days. And you were right, they are short on space. She said they would have to fill your space, there were some kids who desperately need a room, they had been staying at a shelter alone. They are doubling up in the rooms, even. So I said that I would take your stuff, and if they don't have room when you are released, they," Heero paused, "will make arrangements to give me temporary custody of you. You can stay with me." He paused to let that statement sink in.

Duo stared, openmouthed, at Heero. He couldn't quite understand all of what Heero was saying. "You mean..."

Heero nodded. Duo's face broke out into a huge grin. "Duo," Heero began warningly. "That doesn't mean we can..."

"It doesn't?" Duo asked.

"No, you're still a minor, and I'm still your teacher," Heero reminded him. Duo pouted. Heero decided to wait to tell Duo the rest of what he had found.

Duo drifted off to sleep, happy for once about the future, and under the watchful eye of Heero, who had promised to stay the night.
